Welcome to
the NetBSD/i386 Firewall Project
``Of
course it runs NetBSD.''
NetBSD/i386 Firewall is a
free firewall solution for people with a permanent
Internet connection. This includes most users of
cable or ADSL services, but also businesses
with leased lines. PPPoE support and PPTP support is
available on CD.
- Any old PC
will do. If you
have an old PC left over, with a 80486 or more recent
processor (including Pentium processors), with 8 MB of
memory, any old harddisk and two ethernet cards, you have
enough!
- Easy
install. The
standard NetBSD install has been extensively modified to
make install as simple and straightforward as possible,
and it is geared towards people who have no Unix
knowledge and do not intend to get any.
- Stability.
It is based on NetBSD,
one of the most stable platforms for the PC. Install it,
stick it in the basement behind the stairs, and never
look back.
- Extensible.
The base system is kept as lean and mean as possible, but
there's plenty of room to add services, such as your own
mail and web server. We also expect to make a 'Pro'
version available that has many of these services built
in.
- Free.
NetBSD is a free operating system, and therefore so is
this firewall project. If you're an experienced Unix
system administrator or programmer, we have the sources
available for download as well, and those too are free.
If you're happy with the firewall, you can
optionally donate some money, or order the
installer and firewall software on CD. The CD has a lot
of other goodies as well. Check out our CD
and Donations
page.
- Support
your home network.
All computers on your home network can use it, without
having to buy anything extra (well, perhaps some network
cabling). Of course, if you own a small company, that
works just as fine.
NetBSD/i386 Firewall is
based on NetBSD,
a free highly portable UNIX-like operating system available
for many platforms, from 64bit alpha servers to handheld
devices. Its clean design and advanced features make it
excellent in both production and research environments, and
it is user-supported with complete source. Many applications
are easily available.
